Ride Guelph Transit for FREE after 7 pm on New Year’s Eve! Here’s the press release from the city:
Guelph, ON, December 22, 2014 – Guelph Transit is providing free extended transit service to riders after 7 p.m. on December 31.
“Extended transit service on New Year’s Eve has been offered each year since 2007, but this is the first year it’s free,” explains Phil Meagher, general manager of Guelph Transit. “Revellers can ring in the New Year and enjoy a free ride home.”
Free extended service runs from 7 p.m. until the last bus leaves Guelph Central Station at 2:15 a.m.
The free transit service is sponsored by the Downtown Guelph Business Association with additional financial support from the Western Hotel, McCabe’s Irish Pub, Bobby O’Brien’s Irish Pub, Trappers Alley, Albion Hotel and Woolwich Arrow Pub.
"We're delighted that so many downtown businesses have contributed to getting people home safely,” says Marty Williams, executive director, Downtown Guelph Business Association. “Social responsibility is a big part of the culture of Downtown Guelph and this sponsorship reflects that.”
Guelph Transit and Guelph Police Service are also working together to encourage the community to choose a safe way home when celebrating the holiday season.
“We are very pleased to support Guelph Transit and the Downtown Guelph Business Association by promoting this service,” says Acting Chief Jeff DeRuyter, Guelph Police Service. “We hope people are able to enjoy the evening with family and friends, and remind everyone to make safe travel arrangements. If you will be drinking, don’t drive.”
Festive R.I.D.E. programs will be held by Guelph Police Service throughout the month of December. Guelph Transit and Guelph Police Service encourage community members to choose a safe way home this holiday season. Take the bus, a taxi or have a designated driver.
